Unless you live in a cabin in the middle of the woods and are only a triathlete so you can jump on your exercise bike to power your off the grid cabin, you have heard of the PTO!

There have been rumours, conspiracy theories and even suggestions that the PTO killed JFK! But we are here this week to set the record straight about why you should support the PTO and their mission to make triathlon great.

We are joined by PTO Chairman, Charles Adamo who answers all (most) of our questions about how the PTO will work, how their business model works and why this is giving the power back to the greatest triathletes in the world.

Who will win Kona, what upsets will we see in Tokyo, will there be a 'real' sub 2-hour marathon, will Lionel Sanders remember to drink water in Kona? We speculate on all of the things we want to see happen in 2020 and actually have a fair few disagreements.

With so much having happened since we last recorded we discuss the new 70.3 World Record and the most expensive cramp in the history of our sport! We look at the impending show down between Frodo and Lange this year in Kona. We discuss Gomez's decision to aim for Tokyo 2020 and Holly Lawrence's return to racing and if she will step up to long course racing.

We talk about the Super League 2018/2019 season and make our predictions for the final in Singapore.

We announce a range of changes to MaccaX including the new branding and name. MX Endurance is now a collaborative network of athletes all working together to maximise their performance. Head to www.mxendurance.com  to find out more and join for as little as $10 a month.

If you are interested in triathlon then the last few weeks have seen something for everyone. We have had records broken in the lava fields of Kona both on the mens and womens side as well as the launch of the 2018/2019 Super League season.

Macca gives his thoughts on both races. We discuss how Super League Jersey unfolded and how this different format of racing impacted on the athletes. Macca believes that Super League will become a testing ground for future long course stars as well.

We then talk about Kona. So much to say but 2 course records absolutely destroyed. We talk about how both the mens and womens races unfolded and what these results will mean for next year's event. Macca gives his thoughts on which was a more impressive performance. His answer may surprise you. We also discuss some of the gutsy efforts and results off the podium.

We made you wait for it but we made it worth it as we present our 70.3 World Championship recap. Thanks to MG we are also excited to present post-race interviews with your top 3 men, Jan Frodeno, Alistair Brownlee & Javier Gomez. Macca gives his thoughts on the mens and womens race and the stand out performances off the podium.

We discuss the news that Jan Frodeno wont be lining up in Kona and what this means for the race. Who does Macca think will take the title now and how the race will unfold.

Chris talks about the ITU Grand Final on the Gold Coast and in light of what happened with Frodo, tells us if there was ever a time he breathed a sigh of relief to hear someone wasn't racing.

Plenty of results to talk about including some impressive female performances at IM Lake Placid, IM UK and the ITU World Long Course Championships.

We also took the time this week to get some training advice. First, Macca talks about how to manage your training and racing in season and how you can actually use races to find form. We also then discuss the difference between motivation and accountability and how Macca managed to train when he wasn't motivated. These are tips that all athletes, age group or pro can use to improve.

We answer some questions from the MaccaX community and make some more announcements including another addition to the coaching staff.

We are back after Macca's travels around Europe and the US with Superleague. The good thing? We have lots to discuss as we sink our teeth into the recent drafting controversy around IM Texas. Chris gives his thoughts on how we can resolve the growing problem with short, over-crowded courses. We also discuss a whole range of results including IM South Africa, WTS Bermuda, 70.3 Oceanside and Crowie's impressive result in China. We specifically talk about the domination Frodo demonstrated at Oceanside, Lucy Charles' performance in South Africa, swimming faster than most of the male pros and the impressive racing from the Commonwealth Games.

We also discuss when is it ok for Macca to make a comeback to racing? As a former pro who loves the sport, is there ever a time where he would be able to come back and race as an age grouper without being lynched by the masses?

We make a number of announcements for MaccaX including new team sponsors, coaches and upcoming camps.

Welcome back! You might be getting confused by just how consistent this podcast is becoming! But with so much happening in the world of triathlon how could we not!?!? This week we discuss the recent WTS Abu Dhabi race which saw Henri Schoeman and Rachel Klamer take the wins in a race full of crashes and drama! We then take a look at the amazing performances at Iron Man New Zealand over the weekend where Terenzo Bozzone put together an incredible swim, bike and run to not only finally win his home Iron Man but also go sub 8 in the process. We discuss the incredible performance of Cam Brown who at 45 broke his own course record! We also discuss the brilliant victory of Laura Siddel who convincingly turned last year's 2nd place into 1st this year with her 9 hour flat result. Tim also gives his friend and training partner Charles Legget a shout out for taking out the 70.3 in Taupo as well (AG only race.)

We then have a discussion about who is the G.O.A.T triathlete. Gomez? Brownlee? Frodeno? Allen? Find out Chris's thoughts and why he finds it such a difficult question to answer. Thanks to MaccaX member, James Bale for the question this week.

This week we discuss some recent results including Brownlee and Lawrence's performances at Dubai 70.3 as well as Geelong 70.3, Challenge Wanaka and Husky Long Course. Macca talks about the 40 years of Kona history and some of his most memorable moments. We then discuss the biggest changes he noticed throughout his career and afterwards including some changes in technology he thought were ridiculous that turned out to be game changers and some funny stories about how to dress like a cyclist to impress your cyclist friends. We discuss if there is still a place for long course triathlon in the future now that the Olympics are going shorter and answer a MaccaX member, Henning Von Poser's question about where the sport will be in 10 years.

Plenty of laughs this time as Chris accepts just how old he is and how long he has been involved in the sport! He also discusses the changes in triathlon fashion since he first started out.

So much to discuss this episode including the Henri Schoeman's news and why athletes are crucified on social media before all the information has been discovered. We discuss Alistair Brownlee's plans for 2018 and if we will see him line up at an IM distance race. Alistair is racing Dubai 70.3 and will be aiming for the $1 Million Triple Crown Prize. We also discuss Javier Gomez taking on Kona this year and why it was the right time for him to step up in distance. We discuss the women to watch this year and the different seasons we can expect to see from Holly Lawrence and Daniela Ryf. We discuss some of the women coming back from maternity leave and changes happening to the Bahrain Endurance 13 team this year as they prepare for Tokyo and more World Championships.

Chris gives his opinions on why it is important to take a break every year for both your mental and physical wellbeing and a bit of an update about Superleage's new season and why you want to be a member of MaccaX with all of the benefits coming!

Western Sydney 70.3

Bahrain 70.3 – should be an easy $1m for Daniela

Medellin, Colombia a potential cycling and running haven, great weather

  • Busy city but great tracks and trails just outside
  • Like NZ but cheaper, welcomes investment and foreigners

ITU Long Distance Worlds

  • Congrats to MaccaX member Jenna-Caer Seefried, age group world champion
  • Original Ironman Canada course all the greats like Peter Reid raced on
  • 3-120-30, an ideal long distance format you can race til the finish
  • Lionel Sanders: Macca’s fave triathlete outside of Javier Gomez; has had the #1 season this year among the men; walked away from 70.3 Worlds to focus on Kona
  • Josh Amberger now working with the Trisutto group, same coach as Sarah Crowley’s
  • Sarah Crowley won ITU LD Worlds, has had the #1 season this year (Frankfurt, Cairns, going to Konai)

Kona

  • Frodeno has dodged big events; could he see Sanders as a threat?
  • Sanders has worked on his weaknesses, improved swim with Gerry Rodriguez
  • Tim Don’s 70.3 Worlds performance (3rd) was done off an Ironman build; able to drop the fast boys and strong at finish
  • Ben Hoffman, Brent McMahon
  • Kona doesn’t seem to have depth, unlike back in Macca’s day four previous champions were racing the field every year (Faris, Stadler, Crowie, Macca) plus Raelert and Chris Lieto; pressure was on defending champion to dictate the pace
  • Women’s side, Ryf to dominate completely with Crowley as potential challenger -- could Ryf be better than Chrissie?

Ironman 70.3 Worlds

  • Split men’s and women’s races; great course
  • Ryf crushed the field mentally even before the race, was in a great headspace
  • Defending champion Holly Lawrence imploded mentally (looking back instead of looking forward)
  • Emma Pallant starting to come through the distance -- learned the craft racing in Asia then ran through the field to finish 2nd
  • Coverage could be better, don’t just stay with the leaders; commentary lagged by 10 minutes
  • Awesome men’s race
  • Tim Reed vulnerable to big swimmers like Ben Kanute (racing Super League Jersey) who led out of the water and changed the dynamic
  • Javier Gomez was tactically smart, prepared to race this
  • Sebastian Kienle frustrated, could not put pressure on
  • Sam Appleton had a good year
  • Proves ITU athletes can succeed in long-course

Triple Crown

  • Gomez and Ryf going after it, with $2mil total on the line at Ironman 70.3 Bahrain

Javier Gomez

  • Should he move to Ironman? Not doing so he could miss out on peak years of racing
  • Still has Olympic dreams; Spain a contender for mixed relay gold in 2020

Super League Jersey

Macca and MG are back in the ‘studio’ with a very special guest Formula 1 racing driver Jenson Button who happens to also be a pretty good triathlete.

Jenson talked about his journey into triathlon and his dreams for Kona and training whilst working as a F1 driver.

Macca shared the experience of being a part of the Crown Prince of Bahrain’s swim from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain – 31kms and change – a swim that proved to be a very challenging one and an honour to be a part of.

In another Middle East trip Macca took part in the Ride for Roy to honour and fundraise in memory of the triathlete Roy Nasr killed tragically in a bike accident.

The boys reviewed the weekend’s racing action in ITU at New Plymouth where Mario Mola took the honours ahead of Gomez.

Finally a wrap up of Ironman Asia Pacific in Melbourne with Chris sharing the experience from a coach’s perspective.

Don’t forget to check out the 2014 Thanyapura Supercamp – >> www.thanyapura.com/supercamp << which will be August 23rd-30th

The boys finished with a Q and A session.

Macca and MG with a live studio audience present a podcast reviewing the latest racing from the Southern Hemisphere including IMNZ, Husky Long course, Challenge Philippines and Devonport Tri.

First up Ironman New Zealand taken out by Marko Albert with a cracking second place to legend Cam Brown and a solid third from MaccaX friend Terenzo Bozzone.

The guys discuss the DNF from ‘supermodel’ Bevan Docherty.  The girls’ race was won in record time by Meredith Kessler.  MG asks if this has motivated Macca….

Next up Husky Long Course in NSW, Australia taken out by a very in form Pete Jacobs.  Solid performances from other Aussies, Tim Reed and Sam Appleton with the girls’  race taken out by Liz Blatchford.

Macca told us of his Challenge Philippines experience where even getting behind a tuk tuk didn’t help.  Is this the hardest race in the Southern Hemisphere?

Macca mixed with royalty when the royal princes of Bahrain raced at the Challenge event.

Devenport used to be one of the must do races in Australia – Macca infamously got banned from this race…….back in the day!

The experts then cast their eyes over the upcoming events, notably IM Melbourne and Abu Dhabi.  Will Crowie win Melbourne, can Supermodel finish the race?

Abu Dhabi short course will feature the Brownlee brothers.

Macca spoke about his upcoming plans – he’s off to Carnivale in Rio with Michael Phelps but before that he’ll be doing a charity ride in the UAE .

The heir to the Bahrain throne is swimming from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain – a cool 34km and Chris is joining on this crazy endeavor.

Other news:

Camps are now on the website www.maccax.com/camps

Places will fill fast….

Macca shoots a commercial for Under Armour’s launch in Australia with Rebel Sport.

The guys finish up with questions from the facebook group and Big Ring gets on the line….

Please take the time to leave a review on itunes.

  • Who will win the 70.3 World Championships this year.

MG and Macca welcome to the show our first international guest Jurgen Zack 8 Ironman distance wins to his name.   Jurgen was a big part of the German dominance at this distance.

Jurgen talked about his voyage into triathlon and IM – starting as a track runner when an injury got him cycling.  Then he found triathlon, taught himself to swim and started racing.

Initially he said he would NEVER race at Hawaii – it looked crazy.

He raced his first Hawaii in 1989 – a virtual unknown – and came 7th.  He quickly came to realize he loved the atmosphere of Hawaii and would be back.

In 1997 Jurgen finished Roth in 7.51 only to be passed with one mile to go!

Jurgen Zack is not done yet – does he have unfinished business in Hawaii – will the Zack Attack be back?

Macca talked about his role as Caroline ‘Xena’ Steffen’s coach and also the disappointment of the Last Dance with Lance being postponed.

Macca, MG and Jurgen talked about the athletes coming across to long course – the likes of Gomez, Frodeno and the Brownlees – the Wind of Change is here and it’s going to be fascinating!

Also in the show – training camps for 2014 announced, Macca’s pick for the 70.3 Worlds and a wrap up of the Geelong 70.3 last week as well as a lot of fun and humour.

Show Notes:

THE PROS peteMacca as we know is not racing due to glandular fever. MG and Macca sit down and talk all things Kona – who are their picks? How will the race pan out at the big dance?

Both agree Pete Jacobs is looking in great form having decimated the field in Sunshine Coast 70.3 including swimming with and over Clayton Fettell. A lot will depend on the bike. The benefit of riding in the front pack on the bike has been calculated by Aaron Hersh as 4.30mins Can the 2.40 marathon be beaten – maybe Pete Jacobs or Crowie both capable. The guys talked about how Pete Jacobs will cope in a less than perfect race and will Crowie miss his old nemesis, Macca?

THE GIRLS Excited – two years since Chrissie Wellington retired. Leanda Cave won last year and is everything CW was. Now it’s time to stand up to win. Rachel Joyce – hard to beat – hasn’t raced a lot this year Caroline Steffen – amazing form – fell apart last year scared to win Yvonne Van Vlerken – also up there for third Mirinda Carfrae – for third The talk on the island is always about the weather and of course it will be hot and windy! Prepare for the worst ride 808’s.

MG and Macca discuss how so many people are out training in the heat – it’s in the bank, don’t bother.

Macca will be attending the TGINR party hosted by Bob Babbitt. MG – talked about the race management at Kona – no support provided for the pro’s – or not enough. What difference would it make? The sport hasn’t evolved enough. Rules need to progress.

HOW SHOULD THE AGE GROUPER APPROACH THE RACE?

Heart rate can be deceiving due to the heat. You need a plan particularly a marathon plan. Run lower tyre pressure. Get it into your head – it’s going to be uncomfortable. EMBRACE THE SUCK Drink water not the Gatorade on the course – salt tabs for electrolytes. Gatorade makes you thirsty. 1L per hour. Be flexible in your nutrition during the race. Roll with the punches during the run. Great book – Waterlogged by Tim Noakes

 waterlogged

MG and Macca talked about Thanyapura in Thailand and what a great training facility especially for Kona prep. TSLC-Pool600
