Talking Triathlon

Many of us missed out on seeing the biggest names in our sport line up in Kona in 2020 for the Ironman World Championships so to try and scratch that itch for 2020 we are proud to present the top three women from the 2019 race.

We are joined by Chris McCormack to talk about Sarah Crowley, Lucy Charles-Barclay and Anne Haug. We have repackaged three of the biggest interviews from 2020 into one, action-packed Kona podium special edition of the MX Endurance Podcast.

It finally happened!

The inaugural PTO Championship took place in Daytona and this week we do a deep dive into every aspect of the event.

Did the production live up to the hype? Did we see a war between the long and short course athletes? Did James pick anyone correct last week?

We give our thoughts, feedback, things we loved and what we think can be improved at this new and exciting racing format. We geek out about some of the biggest names in the sport racing and give you our recap of exactly how the action unfolded.

Lots to unpack this week with the news that Daniela Ryf has done a 'Lionel' and is out injured, endurance sports tv is crowdfunding and the PTO is supporting even more races.

We also saw a number of races happen around the world with some of the biggest names in the sport lining up in Cairns for the Asia-Pacific Championship. We round-up all the professional racing then turn our eye to the age group race.

199 age group finishers competed for 75 Kona slots in Cairns and the internet has done what the internet does. This makes us ask the question? Is this the end of Kona? What do we mean? We mean, does this change people's opinions of racing Kona? Is it about getting the strongest field possible to line up or as many athletes on the pier as possible?

Long course triathlon has been dominated by Jan Frodeno and Daniela Ryf in recent years. So much so that most of their competition have admitted that they don't even think they can beat them!

Does this mean that Jan and Dani have beaten their competitors before the race has even begun? Who or what will it take for someone to stand up to their dominance and not be afraid? Who if anyone can beat them?

To discuss this we are joined by Macca to get his insights into the who, what and why of this question.

In recent years it has been complete German domination at long course racing and a big part of the success of Germany is multiple World Champion, Sebastian Kienle.

This week we are extremely lucky to be joined by 2014 Ironman World Champion Sebastian Kienle. Sebi is one of the biggest names in the sport and part of the fabric of long distance racing.

This week we discuss the impact of 2020, the emergence of the PTO, Lionel Sanders and how at 36 his desire to improve and become a better athlete is stronger than ever.

No one is more dialled in to the changing dynamic of the triathlon world than the Kona winner and uber-biker who is now looking for a new edge to take to the competition.

What a weekend of triathlon with Iron Man, 70.3, XTERRA and even a little ITU World Championship all happening.

We round up the all the racing that happened over the weekend including all of the action from the ITU World Championship. We also look at the PTO supported Helvellyn Triathlon.

All of the racing action, coverage and lack thereof raises the question whether Iron Man is critical to the future success of triathlon? Would Kona still be as iconic if it wasn't called an Iron Man?

You have probably heard that Super League is triathlon done differently and that was certainly the case on the weekend at the SLT Arena Games.

The Arena games saw athletes compete in both the real and virtual world with swims in a pool, riding and running on Zwift. This new format for triathlon was created out of necessity but was it exciting enough to stick around?

MX Endurance gives you the definitive post-race round up as we are joined by Macca to discuss the event as well as interviews with both winners, Jess Learmonth and Justus Nieschlag.

With no Kona this year or much racing at all, we look to the future to try and work out who we think will be the next new Kona champions. Who will be the next male and female athletes to win Kona who have never won Kona before?

Will it be crowd favourite Lionel Sanders or will his second place be his best effort? Can Lucy Charles-Barclay put together a performance good enough to beat Daniela Ryf? Or do we need to look further into the future at up and coming stars like Kristian Blummenfelt or Ashleigh Gentle?

We also discuss the announcement of Taupo 2022 for 70.3 World Championships, the return of professional cycling and Joe Skipper's crazy 12-hour record

This week we are joined by John McAvoy, a former armed robber and one of Britain’s most wanted men.

Born into a crime family, he’s had two spells in prison and ultimately found redemption through the power of sport. Given two life sentences and given assurances by the justice system that he’d never change and always be a danger to society John started his stay in one of Britain’s highest security prisons.

John’s story is fascinating for so many reasons, but ultimately because it highlights the importance and power of sport and the power of opportunity - the difference between having it or not.

Few athlete have have had as big an impact on the sport of triathlon as Chrissie Wellington. A 4-time Kona champion, Chrissie is the fastest woman to ever complete an IronMan distance event and has 5 of the fastest ever recorded results out of the all-time top 10.

As quick as she raced, she came and went retiring in 2011 undefeated at the IronMan distance after one of the toughest Kona victories by any competitor on the big island. This interesting conversation focuses on how triathlon changed Chrissie as a person, the impact it has had on her life and the what the pressure of being undefeated was like.

This week on the show we look at the close racing from Geelong 70.3 in Australia as well as the potential 2022 70.3 World Championship locations.

We also discuss the recent announcement of the Superleague triathlon season opener in NEOM Saudi Arabia. We introduce the first ever MXXX section, the content too hot for the regular episode, then immediately realise that our takes are so hot that we actually cannot include them in the episode!

Unless you live in a cabin in the middle of the woods and are only a triathlete so you can jump on your exercise bike to power your off the grid cabin, you have heard of the PTO!

There have been rumours, conspiracy theories and even suggestions that the PTO killed JFK! But we are here this week to set the record straight about why you should support the PTO and their mission to make triathlon great.

We are joined by PTO Chairman, Charles Adamo who answers all (most) of our questions about how the PTO will work, how their business model works and why this is giving the power back to the greatest triathletes in the world.

This week we take a look at how the racing unfolded in Dubai for Dubai 70.3. We talk about the incredible line up for Challenge Roth this year as well as the announcement of the Bahrain Endurance 13 for 2020.

We discuss how the PTO may or may not be affecting the races athletes choose to do and how 'the strongest ever field' in Roth does not feature Daniela Ryf.

This week we do a bit more research into what the PTO and Collins Cup are all about. We discuss Cam Wurf signing with Team Ineos and the changes to regulations around running shoes.

We then present our 2020 endurance sports predictions. Who will win Kona, what upsets will we see in Tokyo, will there be a 'real' sub 2-hour marathon, will Lionel Sanders remember to drink water in Kona? We speculate on all of the things we want to see happen in 2020 and actually have a fair few disagreements.

This week we sink our teeth into the announcement of the PTO and the Collins Cup (or more try to work out what it is) then we are joined by Olympic gold medal favourite and WTS World Champion, Vincent Luis. We discuss how he is preparing for the World's biggest sporting event. what has changed for him to be more successful and what motivates and pushes him to keep improving.

If you haven't already, watch the footage of Vincent Luis in Singapore last year racing with a flat tyre. It is the perfect example of the sort of athlete he is.
